Sabb. 63ᵇ בירית זו א׳ what the Mishnah calls birith is the Biblical etsadah; modified ibid. בירית תחת א׳ וכ׳ birith has the function of the etsadah (Rashi: birith around the knee serves the same purpose as etsadah on the shoulder, to save inconvenience in walking).
