אַוְסֵי, (or אוּ׳) m. pl. (√אף soft. into או; cmp. אַף, אָנַף; also אֶפֶס) nose, nostrils. Sabb. 67ᵃ ואאוסי דגוריתא and on the nostrils of the young lioness. B. Bath. 73ᵇ דסליק עליה באוסיה אכלה טינא ומית Ms. R. (ed. דיתבא ליה אכלה טינא באוסי׳, Ms. M. אבלה, Ar. ed. Koh. incorr., v. Rabb. D. S. a. l.) into whose nostrils a ‘mud-eater’ (worm) entered, and the fish died. Pes. 112ᵃ ידא אאוסיא וכ׳ (Ms. M. a. Ar. א־פגא) putting the hand to the nose is a step to fear (indicating anxiety). Ḥull. 67ᵇ ועיילי באוסַיֵּיה and they (the worms) creep into its nostrils.
