*שָׁחַל I, *שָׁחַל I (cmp. שָׁחַק; Arab.saḥala decorticavit) to rub off, peel Pi. - שִׁחֵל (cmp. כָּסַףHif.) to grow white, be frightened. Ab. d’R. N., 2ⁿᵈ vers., ch. XLIII (ed. Schechter, p. 122) שחל שהכל מְשַׁחֲלִין לפניו the lion is called shaḥal, because all grow white before him; (Yalk. Prov. 959 שחל שחָלִים לפניו because they tremble before him, prob. corrupt).
