וָתַר, וָותַר (v. יָתַר) to be plentiful. Y. Succ. V, 55ᶜ (ref. to Jer. II, 13) הא וָותְרוּ לאלף (not וותרה) were they not numerous up to a thousand?; Cant. R. to I, 6 הא וותרו למאד (read: למֵאָה).
    Pi. - וִיתֵּר 1) to do more than justice requires, to be liberal; to forego one’s rights. Y. Ned. I, beg. 39ᵃ if they had agreed על מנת לוַותֵּר to yield their rights (to allow each other the use of the entire court). B. Bath. 126ᵃ בכור … ו׳ if a first-born accepted an equal share (of a field) with his brothers, he has renounced his privilege; Y. Keth. IV, end, 29ᵇ חזקה וייתר (read: וִויתֵּר). Ib. וִיתֵּירָה (= וִיתְּרָה). B. Kam. 9ᵃ ו׳ he has renounced his rights (cannot resort to his co-heirs for redress). Ruth R. to I, 8 שוִיתְּרוּ לה וכ׳ they relinquished their claim on her &c.; a. fr. —2) to be indulgent, forgive. Y. Ḥag. I, 76ᶜ ו׳ הקב"ה על וכ׳ the Lord overlooked Israel’s idolatry, but did not &c.; Lam. R. introd. (R. Abba 2). Y. Sot. V, end, 20ᵈ שהיה מְוַותֵּר על קללתו he pardoned those who cursed him. Deut. R. s. 9 נְוַותֵּר לו עוד יום וכ׳ (not עד) let us give him a respite of one day or two.—Num. R. s. 21 לא יהא אדם מוותר על התורה man must not be more liberal than the Law; a. fr.—Snh. XI, 5 (89ᵃ) המוו׳ על דברי נביא he who disobeys a prophet from mere soft-heartedness (v. I Kings XX, 35, sq.). —3) to give additional space to a plant by removing surrounding plants, to make open space. Y. Shebi. II, 33ᵈ top מְוַותְּרִין בגפנים you may clear (in the Sabbatical year) between the grape vines; ib. מקום שׁנהגו לוותר וכ׳ where it is customary to clear before the festive month; Tosef. Shebi. I, 7 מְוַתְּרִין; ib. להתיר ed. Zuck. (read: לוַותֵּיר).
    Nif. - הִוָּותֵר (v. נָתַר) 1) to be let loose, set free. Midr. P’tirath Mosheh אֶוָּותֵר (Jellinek Beth-ham-Midrash I, 125; v. Lattes Saggio 107). —2) to be outlawed, v. infra.
    Hithpa. - הִתְוַתַּר, , Nithpa. נִתְוַתֵּר (v. נָתַר) 1) to become loose (of bowels). (of bowels). —2) to be declared free, be outlawed. Cant. R. to III, 4 נִתְוַתְּרוּ מעיו וכ׳ (Yalk. Is. 288 נתרזו בני מ׳) his bowels were loose that whole night. B. Kam. 50ᵃ bot. יִתְוַותְּרוּ חייו Ms. M. (ed. יִוָּתְרוּ, Nif., v. supra) his life shall be let loose i.e. shall be outlawed; Ar. ed. Koh. יִתְיַתְּרוּן מעיו וחייו (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note); Tanḥ. Ki Thissa 26 יתותרון בני מעיו his bowels &c., v. next w.; Yalk. Ps. 648 יִוָּתְרוּ חייו his life be outlawed.
