עֶכֶן, (עָכַן; cmp. חֲכִינָא) annulated snake. [Lam. R. to I, 3 אמר עכן בית, read, as Num. R. s. 12 אמרו אעפ"כ מת.]—Lev. R. s. 16 (play on תעכסנה, Is. III, 16, v. עֶכֶס) והיה אותו הריח … כארס של ע׳ and the scent (of the balsam) permeated them like the venom of a snake; Sabb. 62ᵇ כארס של ע׳ Ms. O. (ed. כארס בכעוס, v. כָּעוּס); Yalk. Lam. 1031 ונצרר עכנה בהם (a misplaced corrupt. of כארס של ע׳).—Pl. עֲכָנִים, עֲכָנִין. Sifré Deut. 321 (ref. to זחלי עפר, Deut. XXXII, 24) אלו ע׳ וכ׳ (not עשנים, Var. הכינים, read: חֲכִינִים) that means the snakes whose rulership is in the dust; Yalk. ib. 945 עֲכִינִין.
