עֲבוֹט m. (b. h.; עָבַט; cmp. עָבַת s. v. עֲבוֹת) [fastening; cmp. חֲזָקָה,] 1) pledge, security. B. Mets. 114ᵇ (expl. Deut. XXIV, 12) לא תשכב ועֲבוֹטוֹ אצלך thou must not go to bed with his pledge with thee.—2) = עָבִיט saddle, saddle-bag. [Tosef. Maasr. III, 13, v. עָבִיט.]—Pl. עֲבוֹטוֹת saddle cushions, rugs &c., baggage. Tanḥ. Emor, ed. Bub. 26, note 188 אתה יודע שאין לי זהב א"ל ותן לי ע׳ נתן לו טפיטוס וכ׳ thou knowest that I have no gold. Said he to him, then give me the baggage, and he gave him a rug and other garments that he had robbed him of; ib. תן לי אותן ע׳ שנטלת ממני give me that baggage which thou hast taken from me; נתן לו אותו זהב ואותן ע׳ מקצת he gave him that gold (of which he had robbed him) and the baggage, but only a part thereof; Tanḥ.
