הַבְדָּלָה f. (בָּדַל) 1) cutting apart. Ḥull. 20ᵇ מצות ה׳ the law ordering the separation of the head from the body (Lev. I, 15). Ib. ישנו בה׳ must be cut apart; a. fr. —2) separation. Gen. R. s. 3 ויבדל ה׳ ממש vayyabdel (Gen. I, 4) means real separation (in space, not logical differentiation). Ḥag. 15ᵃ ה׳ … דהואי the separation (of the waters) took place on the second day. —3) Habdalah, a formula of prayer for the exit of the Sabbath or Festivals, v. אַבְדָּלָה. Ber. VIII, 5; a. fr.—Pl. הַבְדָּלוֹת the distinctions referred to in the Habdalah. Ḥull. 26ᵇ bot.; Pes. 104ᵃ סדר ה׳ the order of the subjects of distinction.
