  1. *אַוְורָא, ; pl. אַוְורֵי (אֲוַר dial. for עבר, v. Nœld. Mand. Gr. p. 48 sq.; v. Ar. s. v. where אוברים = עוברים [not אובדים as in ed. Koh.] is twice used to account for the etymol. of our w.) crossers of rivers, travelers. בֵּי א׳
  2. *אַוְורָא, crossing, ford. B. Mets. 103ᵇ אריסא עביד בי א׳ Ar. (ed. בי יאורי; Ms. H. בי אוריא, marg. יאורי) the tenant must entertain the crossings (of the dykes, ed. the channels) in the farm. M. Kat. 28ᵇ רהיט ונפיל בי א׳ ואמברי יזיפתא יזיף Ar. (ed. ונפיל אמעברא ויזיפתא וכ׳ …, Ms. M. ונפיל בר זיירא אמברא …, v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. note) one runs and rushes to the ford, and on the ferry he makes a loan (to pay the ferry-man; allegory of man’s carelessness in providing for the life to come).
  3. *אַוְורָא, among the crossing passengers. Ib. (according to a second interpretation, v. Ar. s. v.) one runs and rushes among those ready to cross (mortals) &c. Cmp. עִיבְּרָא B. Bath. 91ᵃ bot.
