אֲבַנְתָּא, (בין) understanding, speculation. Meg. 24ᵇ בא׳ דל׳ תלי (Ms. M. באוב׳) it depends on the speculative faculty (not on the physical sight). Ab. Zar. 28ᵇ באו׳ דל׳ תלי (Ms. M. בליבא תליא, cmp. Tosaf. a. l.) an affection of the eye-sight is connected with (has influence on) the mental faculties; (oth. opin., cmp. אֹבֶן, the fat surrounding the heart).
